Once a COVID-19 exposure has been confirmed in a workplace, there are some safety steps that can be conducted before and during the necessary, thorough clean that will need to take place. Understanding the process can help in preparation for this occurrence.

CDC Recommendations

• Close off the area used by the person who was sick, if possible.
• Open outside doors and windows to increase air circulation throughout the office.
• If there are any HVAC units or fans present in the space, ensure they are turned off.
• If possible, wait at least 24 hours before cleaning or disinfecting the area.
• Wear gloves to clean and disinfect all areas used by the person who was sick, including office space, bathroom, common area, shared electronic equipment remotes etc.
• When the space is empty, vacuum the area with a vacuum equipped with high-efficiency particulate air filter, if available.
• When cleaning soft/porous surfaces use appropriate detergents or cleaners for those surfaces. After cleaning, disinfect with an appropriate EPA register disinfectant.
• After the area has been properly disinfected it can then be reopened for use.
